Fort Boyard


Fort Boyard is situated between the island of Aix and Oléron and the "Pertuis d'Antioche" and it is attached to the town of Île-d'Aix.
The fort is oval in shape, measuring 68 meters long and 31 meters wide, with a total area of ​​2689 m². The walls rise to 20 meters from their foundation. The fort is built on a sandbank called "longe de Boyard" and you can admire it from Fouras and Oléron Islands.
This construction is considering dating from the 17th century, a the project was realized in the course of the 19th century. The fort was built to protect the harbor, the mouth of the Charente, the port and especially the great arsenal of Rochefort from the onslaught of the British Navy, although a few years after its construction, the fort was transformed into a prison. The building is now best known for the TV game show that has the same name.
You can approach the fort by sea boat excursions, however, the entrance is closed to the public.
The boat excursions departing from La Rochelle navigate between Aix and Oléron Islands and around the fort.
