The city is located at the crossroads of the main cities of the region: La Rochelle in the north, south Royan and Saintes southeast. This allowed him to benefit from significant improvements and modernization of its access.
The best House of Pierre Loti remains incredible to visit this globetrotter who was a naval officer and writer.
Rochefort has kept its maritime heritage: International Sea, Old Medical School, Naval Marine Museum.

The magnificent building of the Corderie Royale is the brainchild of Louis XVI and his minister Colbert. To create a powerful navy, they needed arsenals, so in 1666 Colbert built one in Rochefort, on the banks of Charente river, 23 km away from the ocean.

The Corderie now houses the international Sea Center, which offers temporary shows and a visit of the Hermùione, the frigate on which La Fayette sailed to America in 1779.

The buildings are stunning, and the visit is enriching. A pleasant trip through history...
